In general, my research program has three related foci:

Implementaiton of DMH interventions across settings

Online
peer support
& social media use for
mental health

Design & Evaluation of Digital Mental Health (DMH) Interventions

Advancing human-centered design in DMH

Nonsuicidal self-injury risk and recovery

Design and evaluation of digital mental health (DMH) interventions

I focus on creating accessible and engaging digital tools by collaborating with stakeholders throughout the design and evaluation process.  This includes discovery research to understand end-user needs and preferences, iterative prototype development, usability testing and controlled trial. I am currently developing digital interventions for young adults and adolescents who engage in nonsuicidal self-injury, to be integrated into a mental health advocacy group's website.

Online peer support and social media use for mental health

I aim to understand young people's experiences with online communities for mental health support and information, and explore the effects of participation in order to enhance safety and support positive change. I am especially interested in developing and implementing screening and resource recommendation systems in online spaces where young people already seek support.

Select publications:

  • Young adults’ experiences with two publicly available digital resources for self-injury: A qualitative study of a peer support app and web-based psychoeducation.

  • Examining the relationship between use of a mobile peer-support application and self-injury outcomes: A longitudinal mixed-method study.

  • Investigating self-injury support solicitations and responses on a mobile peer support application.

  • “I wanted to see how bad it was:” Mental health self-screening as a critical transition point among young adults.

Implementation of DMH interventions across settings

A key focus of my research has been on the implementation of digital interventions in different healthcare and non-profit settings. At a minimum, successful implementation and sustainment of digital interventions requires thoughtful planning early in the design process, strong community partnerships, and ongoing collaboration. As part of this line of work, I have contributed to practical guides on key considerations for the implementation of digital interventions in healthcare and online settings.

Select publications:

  • Digital Mental Health Treatment Playbook: Successful practices from implementation experiences in American healthcare organizations.

  • Developing, Deploying, and Evaluating Digital Mental Health Interventions in Spaces of Online Help- and Information-Seeking.

  • “The library is so much more than books”: Considerations for implementing youth digital mental health services in public libraries.
